TYPES OF WOODS
The most important
material of wooden boats sure is wood.Type of wood is affecting soundness and
beauty of gulet at least its construction.Generally we are trying to build wooden
boats with african trees.Because they are more durable and strong woods than
north countries woods. There are so many kind of woods on the earth. They get
different properties and soundness. Now we will just explain you the most usual
woods which are using in gulet producing.

IRIKO WOOD
Normally we are
accepting that it’ s the most durable wood for gulet producing. Its the most
heaviest wood. The natural oils found in Iroko prevent water absorption, impede
shrinkage, and many feel that it becomes increasingly beautiful with age and
use. However, the weight of Iroko can alter the sailing and handling of the
vessel and must be factored into the design of the boat.We are suggesting that
kind of wood for frames of gulets. But sure if soundness is the most important
thing for you iriko is the best wood which we can suggest you.So you can use it
all part of wooden boats.

MAHOGANY WOOD
Mahogany is a
fine-grain, tropical hardwood that is easily maintained and is insect, fungus and
rot resistant. It is a hard and strong wood comparable in strength to Oak and
Teak, and is much more scratch resistant than Cedar or Pine. With the best
regards for our environment we take every effort to ensure that our Mahogany is
sourced from well-managed permanent forests that allocate re-plantation.
>Mahogany is selected
for durability and decay resistance to maintain their natural beauty even under
the varying weather conditions. Mahogany furniture seasons/weathers well with
minimal shrinkage and checking. In Malaysian government tests, this wood was
found to last up to 30 years when stakes of Meranti were driven into the
ground. As a hardwood it holds fasteners well and it is environmentally
nontoxic.
Each kiln dried
Mahogany piece is ready to paint, oil, or leave natural. When left untreated it
weathers to a soft gray. If treated, it should be treated with finish products
meant for softer woods because Mahogany is a dense wood. A yearly application
is recommended, or as weather conditions dictate.
Mahogany
is available in many different grades and qualities and good quality mahogany
also makes an excellent exterior finish material. The best mahoganies are Khaya
ivorensis, Sipo utile, Sapeli aboudikro and Niangon nyankom. There are also
varieties of mahogany not well suited for building gulets, which reinforces the
fact that choice of reputable boatyard and suppliers is of paramount importance
in the commissioning of a gulet. That can be alternative of iriko wood on
frames and interior of your gulet. Some of mahogany types we can suggest you for
construction.the best one is Khaya ivorensis. Its possible to find it from west
Africa. You can find Swietenia macrophylla and Swietenia mahogani from east
India.

PINE WOOD
Pine is a soft wood that comes in many varieties from
various parts of the world. Pine (pinos strobus, pinos resinosa, pinos nigra,
pinus palustris).Normally we used to make furniture with pine. But that wood
suitable for gulet construction too.we can say its the most cheap wood for
producing gulets. But sure in the course of time that wood can worn out more
fast than the other alternatives. Live pine trees can be chosen by the builder
and cut down to exact dimensions and specifications. The drawback to using pine
is its long life especially under waterif it is regulary maintenanced well,
there are red, white and black types. Now builders started to use
alternatives to white pine for more durable and soundness gulets.

OAK WOOD
There are so many oak types all over
world.are
hardwood trees, the wood commonly used in furniture and flooring. The bark of
Quercus suber, or Cork oak, is used to produce wine stoppers (corks). This
species grows in the Mediterranean Sea region, with Portugal, Spain,Algeria and
Morocco producing most of the world's supply.
Some European and American oak
species are used to make barrels where wine and other spirits area aged; the
barrels contribute to the taste.
In
boat producing builders should have so much experience for using that kind of wood
on wooden boat construction. There are so less oak wood builders on
gulets.
Because there are more better alternatives than that wood.Increasingly
builders are using laminated epoxy constructed frames with traditional
planking, or epoxy frames with diagonal veneer planking. And they are choosing
mahogony for frames mostly.
|
MULBERRY WOOD
It s possible to
see that kind of wood in the Southwest Asia and Eastern, North America. It has
so many different types like ,White Mulberry , Chinese Mulberry, Black Mulberry
, Red Mulberry , Himalayan Mulberry and some local mulberry woods.it is not so
useful woods for gulets. But it is possible to see on frames of gulets. But so
less builders can use it like oak.Sure mahogony is alternative of it on frames
like oak wood.
